Overview & requirements

This guide explains how to prepare and configure an Easee charging installation for external load control under §14a EnWG.

When to use this guide

Use this guide for:

  • New charging installations that must support §14a control
  • Installations where charging power is controlled by the distribution system operator (DSO)
  • Existing installations where an external control device is added later

Does §14a apply?

In Germany, §14a generally applies to a charging installation when it is not publicly accessible, has a grid connection capacity above 4.2 kW, is connected to the low-voltage grid, and was commissioned on or after 1 January 2024.

Typical installations

  • Single-family homes and apartment buildings
  • Employee charging and restricted-access commercial sites
  • Private fleet depots

Generally excluded

Publicly accessible charging stations are generally outside the scope of §14a.

How the system works

The external control device sends a control signal to the Equalizer AMP through a potential-free dry contact. The Equalizer makes the control state available to the Easee installation. The configured limit is then applied to the associated circuit, and connected chargers adjust charging power automatically.

Example §14a system architecture: the distribution system operator sends a request to an external control device, which is wired to an Equalizer AMP and Equalizer. The Equalizer communicates through Wi-Fi with the Easee Cloud and charger.

The Equalizer AMP is shown as one example of a compatible metering solution. The suitable solution depends on the installation.

Important

Depending on the DSO rollout, the chargers and Easee components may be commissioned before the external control device is available. Prepare the installation in advance. Once the device is installed, a qualified installer connects it, completes the configuration, and verifies the control signal in line with the DSO requirements.

Select the right metering solution

The right metering solution depends on the size of the installation, the main fuse rating, and the grid operator’s requirements.

Easee solution

Easee Equalizer AMP

Easee’s own metering solution with current transformer clamps installed directly on the phases. CT clamps up to 100 A are included.

  • Suitable for installations up to 100 A
  • Supports PV surplus charging
  • Basic configuration via the Installer App
  • Freely configurable control levels via Easee Support
Control levels: up to 4S0–S3

CVM E3 Mini (Modbus)

Suitable for installations up to 250 A. The device does not provide a potential-free output signal; control is handled via Modbus.

  • Two switching states possible
  • 0% and one configurable power value
  • Configuration exclusively via Easee Support
Control levels: 2

Janitza UMG 604 Pro (Modbus)

For larger installations from 100 A. Supports CT clamps and Rogowski coils, which are recommended from 500 A.

  • Suitable for larger installations
  • Potential-free contact for additional control levels
  • Configuration exclusively via Easee Support
Control levels: up to 4

Load shedding via API

If the grid operator supports cloud-based control, load shedding can be implemented directly via the Easee API – without a physical control signal.

Confirm with the grid operator in advance

Not all grid operators support this option. Prior approval is required.

Control signal from the grid operator

The grid operator usually sends the control signal via a ripple control receiver or an FNN control box. The signal is connected to a potential-free relay and then transferred to the Equalizer via the metering device.

NO – Normally Open

In idle state, the contact is open. Power reduction becomes active when the signal is present and the contact closes.

Most common option

This option is commonly used with ripple control receivers.

NC – Normally Closed

In idle state, the contact is closed. Power reduction becomes active when the signal is no longer present.

Confirm with the grid operator

This option is less common and should be clearly confirmed before configuration.

Wi-Fi connection required

The Equalizer must remain online so that the control signal can be processed reliably. Check the Wi-Fi connection before commissioning and after completing the installation.

Configure Ripple Control in the Installer App

GPI Ripple Control is configured in the Easee Installer App. The function can only be tested meaningfully when the system is fully installed.

Enable “Use Ripple Control: On”, set the signal limit, and confirm NO/NC with the grid operator.

Important commissioning note

The GPI Ripple Control function can only be tested with the system fully installed. Testing by bridging the inputs on the AMP is not suitable and does not provide valid results.

Freely configurable control levels for Equalizer AMP, CVM E3 Mini, and Janitza UMG 604 Pro are configured exclusively via Easee Support.

Check installation & configuration

Use these checks if charging power is lower than expected, the charging robot does not respond, or the Equalizer appears offline.

Charging power is lower than expected

  • Ripple Control is enabled in the Installer App.
  • The configured signal limit matches the grid operator’s requirements.
  • There is sufficient available power at the site.

Charging robot does not respond to the control signal

  • The Equalizer is connected according to the installation plan.
  • The NO/NC configuration matches the FNN control box.
  • The Equalizer and charging robot are located at the same site.

Equalizer is offline

  • The Wi-Fi connection is active.
  • The device is shown in the Installer App.
  • The firmware is up to date.

PV surplus charging does not work as expected

  • For installations with CVM E3 Mini or Janitza, external Modbus specifications can affect control behavior.
  • In these cases, power may be controlled in steps rather than continuously.

Frequently asked questions & support

Short answers to common questions about the metering solution, control levels, and combining it with PV surplus charging.

Does the Equalizer always have to be installed with the AMP?

No. Depending on the installation size, CVM E3 Mini or Janitza UMG 604 Pro can also be used. The right solution depends on the main fuse, metering concept, and grid operator requirements.

What happens to the charging unit during load shedding?

The available charging power is reduced to the configured value. Charging is not necessarily stopped; it is limited according to the control level.

Does PV surplus charging work together with §14a?

Yes, PV surplus charging is possible with the Equalizer AMP. External Modbus specifications can affect control behavior, especially with CVM E3 Mini or Janitza.

How many control levels does the Equalizer support?

With Equalizer AMP and Janitza, up to four levels are possible. With CVM E3 Mini, two switching states are available.

When are Rogowski coils more suitable than CT clamps?

Rogowski coils are mainly recommended for larger installations, especially from around 500 A.
