§14a EnWG – Setting up load shedding

Step by step: configure the Equalizer for grid operator control.

What is §14a EnWG?

Since 1 January 2024, all newly installed controllable consumption devices – including charging units – must be capable of being controlled by the grid operator. If required, the grid operator may reduce the charging power to a minimum of 4.2 kW. The charging unit remains reachable and resumes charging automatically once the signal is lifted – without requiring re-authorisation.

Which measurement device is suitable?

The choice depends on the main fuse rating.

Easee Equalizer AMP

Easee's proprietary device, connected directly to the phases via CT clamps. Includes CT clamps for up to 100 A. Also enables PV surplus charging. Basic configuration (GPI Ripple Control) via Installer App; custom control levels via Easee Support.

Control levels: Up to 4 levels (S0–S3)

CVM E3 Mini (Modbus)

Suitable for installations up to 250 A. No dedicated potential-free contact – the signal is transmitted via the Modbus input. Two switching states possible (0% and one configurable percentage value). Configuration exclusively via Easee Support.

Control levels: 2 levels

Janitza UMG 604 Pro (Modbus)

For large installations from 100 A. Supports CT clamps and Rogowski coils (recommended from 500 A). Dedicated potential-free contact for configurable control levels. Configuration exclusively via Easee Support.

Control levels: Up to 4 levels

Load shedding via API

If the grid operator accepts control via cloud API, load shedding can be implemented directly through the Easee API – without a physical control signal. This option must be agreed with the grid operator in advance.

Not all grid operators accept the API option. Prior approval is required. API documentation: developer.easee.com

Control signal from the grid operator

The grid operator sends the control signal via a ripple control receiver or an FNN control box. Both are connected to the measurement device using a potential-free contact. The measurement device then forwards the signal to the Equalizer.

NO – Normally Open

Contact is open at rest. Throttling activates when the signal is applied (contact closes). Most common setting with ripple control receivers.

NC – Normally Closed

Contact is closed at rest. Throttling activates when no signal is present. Less common – check with your grid operator.

Wi-Fi is mandatory

The Equalizer must maintain a permanent Wi-Fi connection for §14a load shedding to function. Without an active connection, load shedding cannot be executed.

GPI Ripple Control is configured using the Easee Installer App. Custom control levels are set up additionally by Easee Support – please open a ticket in advance.

Note on commissioning

GPI Ripple Control can only be tested on a fully installed system. Testing by bridging the inputs on the AMP is not suitable and will not produce a valid result.

Setting up GPI Ripple Control

  1. Open the Installer App → select the site
  2. Tap the Equalizer → open the "Meter" tab
  3. Tap "GPI Ripple Control"
  4. Enable "Use Ripple Control: On"
  5. Set the signal limit (e.g. 22 % ≈ 9 kW – minimum value: 4.2 kW)
  6. Agree on contact type NO or NC with the grid operator and configure accordingly

Frequently asked questions

Does the Equalizer have to be installed with the AMP?+

No – the AMP is one option for installations up to 100 A. Compatible Modbus meters (CVM E3 Mini, Janitza UMG 604 Pro) can be used as an alternative.

What happens to the charging unit during load shedding?+

The charging unit is throttled to the configured control level or paused completely. It remains reachable in standby – for firmware updates, status queries and app control. Once the signal is lifted, the vehicle resumes charging automatically. Re-authorisation is not required.

Does PV surplus charging work alongside §14a?+

Yes. The Equalizer dynamically adjusts charging power based on available PV surplus while simultaneously responding to §14a control signals. During load shedding, the grid operator signal takes priority. PV surplus charging is less dynamic with the CVM E3 Mini and Janitza than with the Equalizer AMP.

How many control levels does the Equalizer support?+

AMP and Janitza UMG 604 Pro support up to 4 control levels (S0–S3). CVM E3 Mini supports 2 levels. Custom levels are configured via Easee Support.

When are Rogowski coils preferable to CT clamps?+

For measured currents above 500 A. Rogowski coils can be placed more flexibly around large conductors and do not experience saturation effects. The Janitza UMG 604 Pro supports both types.

Are there subsidies for §14a-compliant charging units?+

Many subsidy programmes (KfW, federal states) have required §14a compliance since 2024/2025. Operators also benefit from reduced grid usage fees. Check the relevant websites for current KfW and regional subsidy details.
