Charging is slower than expected

  • Updated

To understand the charging speed you are achieving, it is primarily necessary to look at which limitations and restrictions have been set during installation and on the Easee charger.

How quickly the car can charge is affected by several factors, including:

  • the capacity of the electrical system

  • settings in the charger

  • the charging cable

  • limitations in the car

For more information about expected charging speed, you can also see the article:

See charging limitations in the Easee app

Easee app can show you which limitations are affecting the charging in real time.

This makes it easier to understand why the car is charging at a certain speed.

If you tap the lightning icon in the app (as shown in the example below), you will get a menu showing various limitations affecting the charging. It is always the lowest limitation that applies.

Explanation of charging limitations

You can tap each individual limitation in the app to get a more detailed explanation.

Examples of limitations shown in the app:

Limited by vehicle
The available energy usage is limited by the vehicle itself.
Dynamic fuse limit
The available energy has been limited by the user, operator, or third-party integration.
Cable rating
Your charging cable appears to be a limitation if you want to utilise full capacity. The installation can deliver more energy than the charging cable is rated for. By changing the cable, you will be able to charge faster if your car supports it.
Maximum charging current
The available energy has been limited by the maximum charging current as part of the charger's settings.
Maximum fuse limit
The available energy is limited by the maximum fuse current configured in this charging system's settings.
Fuse size
The available energy is limited by the fuse size.
Temporary charging limitation
The available energy has been limited by the user, operator, or third-party integration.
Maximum fuse limit (fallback)
This setting allows you to regulate the maximum charging current on this fuse when EaseeLink™/Equalizer becomes unavailable.
Schedule limitation
The available energy is limited according to the charging schedule.
Reduced current
The charging speed is temporarily adjusted to maintain optimal operation.
Limited by Tibber
Tibber has limited the available energy due to smart charging.
Limited by Tibber
Tibber has limited the available energy on this fuse due to the building's power consumption.
Limited by external system
An external system has limited the available energy.
Load balancing
The available energy is limited due to load balancing between the building and connected vehicles.

These limitations can come from both the electrical system, the charger, or external systems that control power distribution.

Limited by vehicle

If the app shows the message "Limited by vehicle", it means that the car itself is drawing less current than what is available from the charger.

This is in many cases completely normal.

For example, many cars will:

  • start charging gradually when a charging session begins

  • reduce the charging speed towards the end of the charging session

In some cases, there may also be charging limitations set directly in the car.

If you want to investigate this further, we recommend checking the car's own charging settings in the car's infotainment system or associated app.

💡 Tips

⚠️ Reboot charger - This will recalibrate the sensors in the charger.

⚠️ Test with a different vehicle and charging cable for a few hours. This helps eliminate the different potential sources of the issue.

During the testing period, we recommend avoiding major changes in the app or in the vehicle settings, as this may affect the results.
