Netbalans: help relieve pressure on the electricity grid (pilot)

  • Updated

In some parts of the Netherlands, the electricity grid is almost full at busy times, especially on weekday evenings. With Netbalans, you help spread that demand. Netbalans works through your existing Easee app. This is a pilot.

What is Netbalans?

Netbalans is a pilot in which charging your Easee charger is briefly paused at busy times. When the electricity grid is under pressure, the grid operator can ask via Easee for less electricity to be used temporarily. Easee then pauses charging for participating chargers. This reduces demand at peak times and keeps the electricity grid stable.

How does it work?

  • Sign up in the Easee app.
  • If the grid is busy, the grid operator asks Easee to use less electricity temporarily.
  • Charging your Easee charger is then paused for a short time: usually up to 1 hour, and a maximum of 2 hours. This mainly happens on weekday evenings. Charging then resumes automatically.
  • You simply plug in your car as usual. If you need your car sooner, tap the Play button in the app to start charging again immediately.
  • Pausing may take place from the moment you join.

Who is the pilot for?

The pilot is for Easee customers with an Easee charger at home in the Netherlands. We work with grid operators in pilot areas. You can see whether your location is included when you sign up in the app.

How to take part

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of the Easee app (App Store or Google Play).
  2. Open Netbalans using the button in the email or through the app.
  3. Read the information and tap Get started.
  4. If your address is not yet (fully) entered in the app, the app will first ask you to confirm it: enter your postcode, check the country and tap Next. If your address is already entered, the app skips this step. If your address is incorrect, you can update it straight away and try again.
  5. Tap Join. This means you agree to the Service Terms for the Grid Service Netherlands Pilot. Rather not? Choose Not interested.
  6. If your location is eligible, you will see Enabled. Tap Got it. If your location is not yet included in the pilot, the app will let you know.

Frequently asked questions

Will my car still be fully charged?
Charging resumes automatically after the pause. A pause usually lasts for a maximum of 1 hour. If you need your car sooner, you can use the Play button to start charging again immediately.

Can I still charge during a pause?
Yes. Have your plans changed and do you want to charge without interruption? Tap the Play button in the app to start charging immediately at full speed.

How often will my charging be paused?
That depends on how busy the grid is. It may take place from the moment you join.

Do I need to change my energy contract or supplier?
No. Your contract remains unchanged.

I cannot see Netbalans in the app. What should I do?

  • Update the Easee app to the latest version.
  • Check your address: open your location, tap the cog (⚙️) in the top right and choose General > About > Address. See Location map.
  • Check that the country in your profile is set to the Netherlands (menu > profile > account > country).
  • Close the app completely and open it again.

I see “Incompatible location – Your location is not yet eligible for Easee Netbalans”. Why?
It looks like the address of your location is incorrect. Update the address directly in the app and try again. You can also check your address through your location: tap the cog (⚙️) in the top right and choose General > About > Address. If it still does not work, your location is unfortunately not eligible for the pilot.

Is this the same as setting a charging schedule?
No. With Netbalans, you do not set anything yourself. If you want to charge smartly yourself, see Schedule & Smart charging.
