How do I add an Easee Key (RFID keytag) using the Easee App?

  • Updated

If an Easee Key is added to your account, the key becomes an identifier for you across the Easee ecosystem. This means that the key can be used on multiple charging sites you have access to. The charging site owners will only be able to see your consumption on the site they are managing. This way you can use the same Easee Key for home, work, gym, etc.

The charging site owners can add you as a user inside the Easee Control by phone number. You can then set up your own Easee Key. Some site owners prefer to give out physical RFID keys instead of adding all the users to the Easee Portal.

You can use other RFID/NFC tags as Easee Keys. Some debit cards can be used if they support the NFC protocol (note that this does not make the card a payment method, it only uses it as an identifier to your account). Be sure that the NFC doesn't change its ID number (like some phones do). Supported protocol is NFC / ISO 14443 and MIFARE Classic® 13.56Mhz.

When adding Easee Keys from the app, you have two possible methods of doing so. Both are done from the Easee Keys section of the app. To get to the Easee Keys section, follow these steps:

  1. Open the app menu.
  2. Press Keys.
  3. Select to add an Account Key or a Local Key.
The local tab shown, with chargers to select.
  4. Proceed to Creating an Account Key or Creating a Local Key below.

What is the difference between an Account key and a Local key?

An Account key is a key connected to your account. It will track you use, and you can assign it to unlock devices you have access to. You can have multiple Account keys. This type of key would be associated with one person or account, to use at different chargers.

A Local key is a key that is used strictly as a key to gain access to a charger. This type of key would be used at only one charger by whoever holds that key. An example would be a building owner giving keys to tenants to use the charger associated with their unit.
