Understand access control
Access control determines who can manage a site, who can charge and how a charging session is authorised.
User role
Determines what a person can manage and view at the site.
Access level
Determines who is allowed to start a charging session.
Authentication
Determines how a charging session is authorised and assigned to a person.
Important
A user role alone does not grant permission to charge. Charging permission is controlled by the access level of the site or charger.
Access levels: Who can charge?
Easee uses three access levels: Open, Public and Private.
Open
Anyone with physical access to the charger.
No authentication required.
Public
People with an Easee account; a site invitation is not required.
Using the Easee App, an Easee Key or a compatible RFID tag.
Private
Only people approved for the site or charger.
Using the Easee App, an assigned Easee Key or a compatible RFID tag.
With Open, sessions cannot be assigned to a person
Without authentication, a charging session cannot be assigned to a specific person. Consumption can still be reviewed for the site or individual charger.

User roles control site administration. Expand a role to view its permissions.
Site ownerHighest permission level on the site
The site owner can manage users, administrators, chargers, access levels and reports.

AdministratorDay-to-day site administration
Administrators can invite users, manage site settings and change access levels. They cannot transfer ownership.
UserUse of approved chargers
Users can use approved chargers and view their own consumption. They cannot manage the site, other users or access levels.

Authorise charging sessions
Authentication verifies charging permission and allows a charging session to be assigned.

Depending on the access level, an approved user can authorise a charging session through the Easee App.
Easee Key or compatible RFID tagAuthorisation by tapping the key or tag on the charger
If the key is assigned to an account or approved user, the charging session can be included in the corresponding consumption data.
No authenticationOnly with the Open access level
Anyone with physical access can charge. Consumption cannot be assigned to a specific person.
Linked and unlinked chargers
Whether an access level applies to the entire site or an individual charger depends on how the charger is configured at the site.
Linked charger
The charger automatically inherits the site's access level.
Changes to the site access level also apply to this charger.Unlinked charger
The charger has its own access level and can be assigned to specific people.
Useful for reserved parking spaces or chargers assigned to individual users.SDU and MDU
At SDU sites, chargers typically remain linked to the site. At MDU sites, individual chargers can be unlinked from site-wide access and configured with their own access level when required.

Private parking spaceAccess for a restricted group of people
A Private access level restricts charging to approved users. Authentication is completed through the Easee App, an Easee Key or a compatible RFID tag.
Residential siteShared or individually assigned chargers
Users can be invited at site level. For reserved parking spaces, a charger can be unlinked from site-wide access and assigned to a specific person.
Track consumptionAssign charging sessions to a person or key
A charging session must be authenticated to be assigned to a person. With the Open access level, consumption can only be reviewed by site or charger.

What is the difference between a user role and an access level?
A user role determines what a person can manage or view. An access level determines who can start a charging session.
Can a site have more than one owner?
No. A site has exactly one site owner. Multiple administrators and users can be added.
Does every user need an Easee Key?
Not always. Open does not require authentication. With restricted access levels, authorisation can be completed through the Easee App, an Easee Key or a compatible RFID tag, depending on the configuration.
Can an individual charger have its own access level?
Yes. When a charger is unlinked from site-wide access, it can be given its own access level. This is useful for reserved parking spaces, for example.
