Who can charge — and what determines access?

Charging access depends on two things: your role at the Site and the access rule that applies to the charger.

Site roles determine who can manage access and who has charging permission. Linked and Unlinked determine whether a charger follows the Site’s access rule or uses its own.

The overview below shows how these relationships work together.

An Unlinked charger uses its own access rule independently of the Site. Operators do not receive charging permission from their role alone. Enlarge overviewClose enlarged overview

Go straight to the instructions

01Choose who may charge

The access level determines who can charge and whether authentication is required.

Open:
Charging is available without authentication.
Public:
Authentication is required, but users do not need an individual invitation.
Private:
Charging is restricted to authorised users.

For Public and Private access, authentication can use an Easee Key or another compatible RFID tag. A key does not always need to be linked to a personal Easee account. Whether it works depends on how it is registered and the access permissions that apply.

02Check where the setting applies

A Linked charger follows the Site access rule. An Unlinked charger uses its own access rule, independently of the Site access setting.

Changing the Site access level affects every Linked charger. To give one charger a different access level or its own approved-user list, manage it separately in Easee Control.

Unlinking does not remove the charger from the Site. Site Owners and Site Administrators retain permission to charge at both Linked and Unlinked chargers.

03Change access

You need Site Owner or Site Administrator permissions to change access. If you are a User, ask one of them to make the change.

These instructions apply to Sites operated by Easee. If another Operator manages the Site, use its app or contact the Operator.

Choose an access level in the Easee App

For a shared Site, check the setting’s scope in Easee Control before changing access.

  1. Open the charger in the Easee App and select Access on the charger card.
  2. Select Open, Public or Private. Look for the confirmation at the bottom of the screen.

If the option is unavailable, ask the Site Owner or Site Administrator to check your permissions.

Manage one charger in Easee Control

Use this method to manage whether the charger follows the Site access rule or uses its own access rule. Open Easee Control

  1. Sign in, select Easee View and open the Site.
  2. Open the charger, then select Access using the lock icon.
  3. Choose Linked to use the Site access level. To manage the charger separately, select its own Open, Public or Private setting.
  4. For Private access, use Access list to review or manage approved users. Before adding someone, check how the Site type affects their access.
Before inviting someone: SDU and MDU Site access

The Site type affects whether inviting someone to an Unlinked charger also gives them access to the Site.

SDU and MDU here refer to the Site type, not the charger product group.

User access to Unlinked chargers on SDU and MDU Sites
Site type When a user is added to an Unlinked charger
MDU Site The user can be added to that charger without receiving additional permission for the Site.
SDU Site The user also receives access to the Site.

To find the Site type in the Easee App, open the Site overview, select settings and open About. If this information is unavailable, ask the Site Owner or Site Administrator.

  5. Select Save.
Change the Site access level in Easee Control

This changes access for chargers that follow the Site setting. Open Easee Control

  1. Open the Site, then go to Tools → Access Control.
  2. Choose the required access level. For Private access, check that the intended users are approved for the Site.

Access set as intended?

If the saved access level and, for Private access, the approved users match your choice, setup is complete.
