Manage Easee Keys
Choose the right key, add it where it needs to work and understand how charging is recorded.
Easee Keys can provide personal account-based access, site-wide access without an individual Easee account connection or offline access at one charger. Start with how the key should work. The article then shows you where to add it, where charging is recorded and what to do if the key no longer works.

01Choose how the key should work
Start with the situation that matches how the key will be used. For most personal use across different locations, choose an account key. The next chapter shows where to add it.
| Example use case | Key type | Works offline | Charging is recorded for |
|---|---|---|---|
| You want one personal key for chargers you can access, for example at home, work or the gym. | Account key | No | The linked Easee account. |
| A key should authorise charging at every charger at one site without being linked to an individual Easee account. | Site key | No | The charger. In an export by key, the Key ID is shown as the name. |
| Your personal account key must keep working at one specific charger while that charger is offline. | Imported account key | Yes | The linked Easee account. |
| A key should work only at one charger without identifying the user, for example a key issued for a parking space. | Local key | Yes | The charger total, not an individual user. |
Can I use another card or a smartphone? The identifier must remain the same each time it is presented to the charger.
| Type | Suitability | Why |
|---|---|---|
| RFID or NFC tag | Recommended | Use an Easee Key or another tag with a fixed identifier. |
| Bank card | Usually not suitable | Contactless bank cards normally use changing identifiers. A compatible card is used only for identification, never for payment. |
| Smartphone | Usually not suitable | Apple and Android phones normally use changing identifiers and therefore cannot usually act as a fixed key. |
Supported technologies: NFC / ISO 14443 · MIFARE Classic · 13.56 MHz
02Add the selected key
Use the route you selected above. Each route ends with the result you should see before you move on to charging data.
Add an account key in the Easee AppUse this for personal access and consumption assigned to your Easee account.
Expected result: The key appears under Account. Charging sessions authorised with it can be assigned to your account.
Add a site key in the Easee AppUse this when the key should work at every charger at one site without an individual Easee account connection.
Before you start: You need a site role that allows you to manage keys.
Expected result: The key can authorise charging at every charger at the selected site. It is not linked to an individual Easee account. Charging is recorded on the charger and can be evaluated in an export by key, where the Key ID is shown as the name.
If the option is missing
Your role may not allow site management. Check the permissions before trying again.
Check access and user rolesMake an account key or local key work offlineStore the key directly on one charger over Bluetooth.
Imported account keys and local keys are stored on the charger. Stay close to that charger until the key has been saved.
Local storage limit
One charger can store up to 10 keys locally. Imported account keys and local keys both count towards this total.
Open Keys
Open the Easee App and select Keys.
Select the charger
Select Local, then choose the charger where the key should work.
Connect over Bluetooth
Allow the app to connect directly to the charger.
Choose how the key is stored
Select Import account keys to keep an existing account connection. To create a local key without an account connection, scan a tag or enter its key number.
Expected result: The key can authorise charging while the charger is offline. An imported account key remains linked to its account; a local key does not identify an individual user.
If Bluetooth does not connect
Enable Bluetooth, allow the Easee App to use it and stay close to the charger. If it still fails, follow the connection guide.
Open the Bluetooth guideAdd an account key in Easee ControlUse this as an alternative for account keys only.
This route does not add site keys or keys stored locally on a charger.
Expected result: The key appears under Account keys in your profile.
03Check where charging is recorded
After the key has been added, its connection determines where charging appears. Use the matching view below to check the result.
Your consumption: Easee App
Charging authorised with an account key or imported account key can be assigned to the linked account.
View consumption in the Easee AppExport charging data: Easee Control
Easee Control can export charging data by charger, key, user or energy. For a site key, use an export by key; the Key ID is shown as the name.
Export charging data in Easee ControlLocal keys do not identify a person
Their charging remains part of the charger’s total consumption but cannot be assigned to an individual user.
04Remove or replace a key
When a key changes owner or should stop working, remove it from the same place where it was added. Then add the replacement using the matching route in chapter 02.
Export required records first
If an administrative record is needed, create or export the relevant site report in Easee Control before removing the reporting key.
| Key type | Remove it from | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Account key | Your account in the Easee App or your personal profile in Easee Control. | The key is no longer linked to that Easee account. |
| Site key | The relevant site. You need a role that allows you to manage site keys. | The key can no longer authorise charging at any charger at that site. |
| Imported account key | The charger. | The imported copy is removed from that charger. The original account connection remains until the account key itself is deleted. |
| Local key | The charger. | Local keys cannot be removed individually. Remove all local keys, then add back only those that should continue to work. |
05Fix a key problem
Start with the symptom you can see. Each route ends with the next check or the exact information Support needs.
The key or tag is not recognisedCheck the identifier, where the key was added and the site access setting.
- Confirm that the card or tag uses a fixed identifier. Bank cards and smartphones are generally not suitable.
- Under Keys, confirm that it was added to the correct account, site or charger.
- Confirm that the site access setting allows this key or account to charge.
- Hold the key steadily against the RFID area again.
Expected result: The charger recognises the key and authorises the session.
If it still fails
Try a known working Easee Key. If that key also fails, contact Easee Support with the charger serial number, key ID and exact time of the attempt.
Contact Easee Support“Key already assigned” is displayedThe account key is already linked to another Easee account.
Check whether the key is already saved under Keys in another account. Remove that connection before adding it again.
If you do not know the account
Contact Easee Support and include a clear photo of the key and its key ID.
Contact Easee SupportThe local storage limit has been reachedRemove keys stored on the charger before adding another one.
A charger can store up to 10 keys locally, including imported account keys and keys without an account connection.
Remove imported account keys that are no longer needed. Because local keys cannot be removed individually, remove all local keys and then add back only those that should continue to work.
The Bluetooth connection failsCheck phone permissions and distance before following the Bluetooth guide.
- Enable Bluetooth and allow the Easee App to use it.
- Stay close to the charger.
- Fully close and reopen the Easee App, then try again.
If Support is required
Include the charger serial number, phone model, operating-system version and the point where the connection stops.
Contact Easee SupportI cannot add or manage site keysYour site role may not include key-management permissions.
A normal site user can use a personal account key and view their own assigned consumption but cannot manage site access.
Ask the site owner or administrator to add the site key or adjust your role.
