Easee Keys (RFID) – add, remove and troubleshoot a key

Set up and manage Easee Keys

An Easee Key is an RFID or compatible NFC tag used to authorise charging. The same physical key can work differently depending on where it is registered and whether it is linked to an account.

01Choose where the key should work

Start with the scope: Account, Site or Local. Then consider whether charging should be linked to a person and whether the key must work while a charger is offline.

Diagram showing one RFID key with three scopes: Account follows account access and links charging to a user; Site works across all chargers at one site and may be site-only or account-assigned; Local works on one charger, supports offline charging, and may be local-only or imported from an account.
One RFID key can have different relationships. The compact summary below contains the same essential information in text.

Account

Follows the account’s charging access. The key is assigned to that account, so charging can be linked to the user.

Site

Works on all chargers at one site. It may be site-only or assigned to an account; this determines whether charging is linked to a user.

Local

Works on one charger and is available offline. It may be local-only or imported from an account; an imported key keeps its account association.

For most personal use: choose an Account Key.

For offline use: store the key locally on the charger. Import it from an account if charging still needs to be linked to that user.

02Set up your key

Open the setup path that matches where the key should work.

Use a personal key wherever your account can chargeAccount Key · charging linked to you

Example: Use one personal RFID key at home, work or another charger your Easee account can access.

01Open Keys
Account tab in the Easee App with Add account key

From the Easee App overview, select Keys in the bottom navigation. Select Account, then Add account key.

02Add the key
Options for scanning or entering an account key

Scan it with your phone or at the charger, or enter the key number manually.

Ready: The key appears under Account. Charging sessions authorised with it can be assigned to your account.

Add an Account Key in Easee Control

This is an alternative route for Account Keys. It does not add Site Keys or keys stored locally on a charger.

01Open Easee View

Sign in to control.easee.com. Select the Easee icon, then Easee View.

02Open your profile

Select your profile in the top-right corner, then View profile.

03Select Keys

Select Keys. Under Account keys, select Add.

04Add the key

Enter the key ID under Key number, add a short name, then select Add.

Use a key across one siteSite Key · all chargers at one site

Before you start, you need a site role that allows you to manage keys.

Site only

Use a shared key when charging does not need to be assigned to one person. Reports show its key ID instead of a person’s name.

Account assigned

The user adds the same key to their own account in the Easee App, just like an Account Key. Charging at the site can then be assigned to that user.

Use the Account Key steps above

01Open the Site Keys
Site key view in the Easee App with the add button

Open the site, select Keys, then select +.

02Add the key
Options for scanning or entering a site key

Scan the key with your phone or enter the key number manually.

Ready: The key can authorise charging at every charger on the selected site. Charging attribution follows whether the Site Key is site-only or account assigned.

If the option is missing

Your role may not allow site management. Check your permissions or ask the Site Owner or Administrator to manage the key.

Use a key on one charger, including offlineLocal Key · stored on that charger

Stay close to the charger while saving the key over Bluetooth. One charger can store up to 10 local-only keys, and these keys can only be removed together. This limit and removal behaviour do not apply to an Account Key imported for offline use.

Local only

Choose this when the key only needs to identify itself to one charger. Charging contributes to total energy and is not assigned to an individual user.

Imported from account

Choose this when an Account Key must work locally and offline. The account association is retained, so charging can still be linked to the user.

01Open Keys

Open the Easee App and select Keys.

02Select the charger

Select Local, then choose the charger where the key should work.

03Connect over Bluetooth

Allow the app to connect directly to the charger.

04Choose how the key is stored

Select Import account keys to keep an existing account connection. To create a local-only key, scan a tag or enter its key number.

Ready: The key can authorise charging while this charger is offline. An imported key remains linked to its account; a local-only key does not identify an individual user.

If Bluetooth does not connect

Enable Bluetooth, allow the Easee App to use it and stay close to the charger.

Follow the Bluetooth connection guide
What can I use as an Easee Key?The tag must present the same identifier each time.

Supported technologies: NFC / ISO 14443 · MIFARE Classic · 13.56 MHz

Suitability of cards and devices as an Easee Key
Card or device Suitability Why
RFID or NFC tag Recommended Use an Easee Key or another compatible tag with a fixed identifier.
Contactless bank card Usually not suitable Bank cards normally use changing identifiers. A compatible card is used only for identification, never for payment.
Smartphone Usually not suitable Apple and Android phones normally use changing identifiers and therefore cannot usually act as a fixed key.

03Remove or replace a key

Remove the correct relationship rather than assuming that one physical key exists in only one place.

Export any records you need before making a change.

Remove the key completely

The consumption history recorded for that key is deleted.

Remove only the account association from a Site Key

The consumption remains, but it can then be identified only by key ID.

Where to remove each Easee Key relationship and what happens
Where it is registered Remove it from What happens
Account Your account in the Easee App, or your personal profile in Easee Control. The account association is removed. If the key remains registered at a site, its consumption remains there but can only be identified by key ID. If this removes the key completely, its consumption history is deleted.
Site · remove account association only The user’s account in the Easee App or Easee Control. The key remains available at the site. Its consumption remains, but the connection to the user’s name or account is removed. Reports identify it only by key ID.
Site · remove key completely The relevant site. You need a role that allows you to manage Site Keys. The key can no longer authorise charging at that site. Consumption recorded for this Site Key is deleted.
Local · imported from account The charger. The local copy is removed from that charger. The Account Key remains connected to its account until it is deleted there.
Local · local only The charger. Local-only keys cannot be removed individually. All local-only keys and their consumption data are deleted together. Add back only the keys that should continue to work.

04Fix a key problem

Open the problem that matches what you see.

The key or tag is not recognisedCheck the identifier, registration and charging access.
  1. Confirm that the card or tag uses a fixed identifier. Bank cards and smartphones are generally not suitable.
  2. Under Keys, confirm that it was added to the correct account, site or charger.
  3. Confirm that the site’s access setting allows this key or account to charge.
  4. Hold the key steadily against the RFID area again.

If it still fails

Try a known working Easee Key. If that also fails, contact Easee Support with the charger serial number, key ID and exact time of the attempt.

The key has authorised the session. Open the Easee App and check the charger’s status to see what is preventing or delaying charging.

Check whether the key is already saved under Keys in another account. Remove that connection before adding it again.

I cannot add another local keyThe charger’s local storage limit may have been reached.

A charger can store up to 10 local-only keys. Account Keys imported for offline use are managed separately and do not count towards this limit.

Local-only keys cannot be removed individually. Remove all of them, then add back only those that should continue to work.
