Easee Keys: how they work and how to get access
Understand when you need a key, how it works and how charging access is arranged.
When access to a charger is restricted, you need to authorise charging before a session can start. Depending on how the site is set up, you can do this in the Easee App or with a registered RFID key. To use the app, your account must have access to the charger.
With Open access, no authorisation is needed.
01What is an Easee Key?
An Easee Key is an RFID tag with a unique ID that you hold against the charger to authorise charging.
How the key is registered determines where it works, whether it can authorise charging offline and how consumption is recorded.
Can I use other RFID keys or cards?
Yes, compatible RFID/NFC tags and cards can also be registered as Easee Keys. They must have a fixed ID that does not change. Supported technology: NFC / ISO 14443 and MIFARE Classic® at 13.56 MHz.
02How do Easee Keys work?
There are three types of Easee Key: Account Key, Site Key and Local Key. These names describe how a key is registered. The same physical key can have more than one registration, such as an Account Key also saved locally on a charger.
Account KeyFor personal chargingUse your personal key at home, at work or at other authorised locations.Internet connection required
Your personal key
An Account Key is linked to your Easee account and works at chargers your account has permission to use. The charger needs an internet connection to authorise charging through the Easee Cloud.
For offline use, your Account Key must also be saved as a Local Key on that charger.
When the charger is online, consumption from sessions started with your Account Key is linked to your account and that key.
Tip: separate private and company charging
Add two Account Keys to the same account and name them, for example, Private car and Company car. Start each session with the matching key to filter consumption by key later.
Sessions started in the Easee App are linked to your account rather than an individual key.

Access across the site
A Site Key provides access across all chargers at a site. A Site Owner or Administrator registers the keys for the site, so they can be handed out without users needing individual Easee accounts.
Once the key is also linked to an Easee account, access depends on that account’s permissions. The account must have access to the site.
The charger needs an internet connection to authorise charging through the Easee Cloud.
For sessions started with a Site Key, consumption can be distinguished by key ID.
Local KeyFor offline accessAlso useful when a key should grant access to one specific charger. Will work if the charger is offline
Offline access on a specific charger
A Local Key is stored on a specific charger and will work if the charger is offline. This is useful in underground car parks without internet access, or when a key should grant access to one charger. A key registered only locally works on that charger and does not require an Easee account.
Each charger can store up to 10 Local Keys for offline use.
Already have an Account Key?
Your Account Key can also be imported and saved locally on the charger. It remains linked to your account and still works at other chargers your account has permission to use.
Local Key consumption: total energy only
When charging is authorised locally—using a Local Key or the locally stored copy of an Account Key—the energy used is included only in the charger’s total consumption.
03How do you get access and set up your key?
Your Account Key works at chargers your account has permission to use. For access to a site managed by someone else, contact the Site Owner or Administrator.
In the Easee App, all three key types are available from the key menu:
Account Key: Add your personal key in the Easee App or Easee Control.
Site Key: A Site Owner or Administrator can add it in the Easee App or Easee Control.
Local Key: A Site Owner or Administrator must save it via Bluetooth while at the charger. This also applies when importing an Account Key.
Add an Easee Key04How do you use your key?
To authorise charging with your registered key:
- Connect the charging cable to your car and charger.
- Hold the key against the charger’s RFID reader.
- Wait until the key is accepted.
Once your key is accepted, charging follows the charger’s settings, including any charging schedule.
If your key is not accepted, check the setup instructions above for your key type or contact the Site Owner or Administrator.
