Access and charging permissions
Who can charge and how access works for sites and individual chargers.
In this article
Access control has two separate parts: the charging permission decides who can charge, while the user role decides what a person can manage.
The access level, authentication method and linked status determine whether a charging session can start and whether it can be assigned to a person.
The user role determines who can change site settings, invite users, manage access levels and view administrative reports.
01Who can charge?
Start with the access level. It gives the quickest answer to who may use the charger and whether authentication is required.
| Access level | Who can charge? | Authorisation | Consumption assignment |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenOpen for everyone | Anyone with physical access to the charger. | No authentication is required. | Recorded for the site and charger, but not assigned to a person. |
| PublicOpen for Easee accounts | Anyone with an Easee account. A site invitation is not required. | Easee App, an account-linked Easee Key or a compatible RFID tag. | Can be assigned when the authentication identifies an Easee account. |
| PrivateApproved users only | Only people approved for the site or the individual charger. | Easee App or a key or tag assigned to an approved account. | Can be assigned to the approved account used for authentication. |
The key type changes the reporting result. Account keys and imported account keys remain linked to a person. A site key belongs to the site. A local key can authorise charging at one charger but does not identify an individual user.
02Who can manage the site?
A role controls management permissions. It does not by itself decide whether the person may charge.
| Role | Can manage or view | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Site Owner | Site settings, chargers, administrators, users, access levels and reports. | Only one Site Owner per site. Only this role can transfer ownership. |
| Administrator | Site settings and access levels, user invitations and site reports. | Cannot transfer ownership. |
| User | Approved chargers and the user’s own assigned consumption. | Cannot manage the site, other users or access levels. |
03Linked and unlinked chargers
The linked status determines whether a charger follows the site access level or uses a separate one.
Linked – follows the site
A linked charger inherits the site access level. Changing the site access level also changes access for every linked charger.
Unlinked – own access
An unlinked charger remains part of the site, but its access level and approved users are managed separately. Site Owner and Administrator permissions remain unchanged.
What changes between SDU and MDU sites?
| Site type | When a user is added to an unlinked charger |
|---|---|
| MDU site | The user can be added to that charger without receiving additional permission for the site. |
| SDU site | The user also receives access to the site. |
To find the site type in the Easee App, open the site overview, select settings and open About. If you cannot see this information, ask the Site Owner or Administrator.
04Change the access level
Use these settings to decide who can use a charger and whether it follows the site’s access setting.

Users can use approved chargers and view their own consumption, but they cannot change access levels or invite other users.
- Sign in to Easee Control, select Easee View and open the required site.
- Open the required charger.
- Select Access using the lock icon.
- Choose Open, Public, Private or Linked. Linked makes the charger follow the site’s access setting; the other options give it its own access level.
- For Private access, open Access list to review or manage approved users. Select Save when you are finished.
If another operator manages the site, change access in that operator’s app or contact the site operator.
Access still not working?
At a managed or shared site, contact the Site Owner, Administrator or operator first. They can confirm the access level, linked status and user approval.
If the site is operated by Easee and the configuration appears correct, contact Easee Support with the charger serial number, access level, linked status, account or key used, exact time of the attempt and any error shown.
