How Easee chargers work together
Understand local communication, charger roles and product compatibility.

This article explains how several Easee chargers communicate, how primary and secondary roles work, and what SDU and MDU mean for a site and its chargers. It also shows which product groups can share a circuit and how to recognise a lost local connection.
Site type and product group are separate. Whether chargers can share a circuit depends on their product group. SDU and MDU products cannot be combined within the same circuit.
01How the chargers communicate
Easee Link: local connection
The chargers communicate over radio. A shared local WiFi network can provide an additional, redundant communication path.
Cloud: separate online connection
WiFi or LTE-M connects the installation to Easee Cloud. A loss of internet connection therefore does not automatically interrupt Easee Link.
02Primary and secondary charger roles
Primary charger (Master)
Coordinates local communication and distributes the available charging power within the circuit.
Secondary chargers (Secondary Units)
Receive their available charging power from the primary charger on the same circuit.
How the primary charger is selected The primary charger is assigned during installation. If the role needs to be moved later, an authorised installer can select Set new master in the Easee Installer App. Easee Support can also assign a new primary charger, for example if the current primary charger has failed.
03SDU and MDU explained
SDU or MDU site
Describes how a site is organised in Easee. SDU (Single Dwelling Unit) typically refers to a smaller private site; MDU (Multi Dwelling Unit) to a larger shared or commercial site.
SDU or MDU product
The charger model determines its product group and which other Easee chargers it can communicate and share power with on the same circuit.
Site type and product group are independent of each other. An SDU product can be installed at an MDU site – and vice versa. Compatibility is always determined by the charger model.
04Which products are compatible?
SDU and MDU products are not compatible with each other. Use only models from the same product group within a circuit.

Easee One technically belongs to the SDU product group, but is market-specific and not available in all markets. An MID or Eichrecht version of Charge Max or Charge Pro does not change its product group.
Why can’t SDU and MDU products be combined? The product groups use different communication architectures. They cannot form one common load-balancing group. An Equalizer does not change the product group. The maximum numbers apply per circuit; a site can contain multiple circuits.

05How a lost local connection appears
The light strip makes the local role and connection status visible. One or two solid white LEDs show normal standby. A flashing first LED identifies a lost Easee Link connection.

Restore the local connection
- Check that the primary charger is powered on and shows a normal LED status.
- If you are authorised to restart the charging circuit, restart the primary charger first.
- Once it has started, restart the affected secondary charger. At a managed or shared site, ask the site administrator or installer to perform the restart.
- Wait a few minutes and check the light strip again.
Still unable to restore the connection?
Contact Easee Support if the first LED on the secondary charger continues to flash white after both chargers have been restarted. Have the serial number of the affected charger or the site key, and a short description of the issue ready.
